Welcome to our school. The Governors continue to work hard within the resources made available to us to make Great Torrington Junior School a successful school. Devon is one of the worst funded local authorities in the country and our school is one of the worst funded schools in Devon. As a consequence the finances we have available to us are somewhat limited. Despite this we have succesfuly enhanced many areas of the physical space we are responsible for in recent years. These include the hall, the administration area, headteacher's room, meeting rooms and staff rooms and, with the help of the PTFA, the library. We have installed a purpose built disabled toilet and negotiated for the provision of the fantastic all weather pitch that the children now enjoy.
We are fully aware that the level many of our children enter the school are below the national expectations and that at least a third of our children have special educational needs. These facts impact on the overall standards in the school but the governors remain determined to push these standards up despite the obstacles. To this end in the academic year 2008-2009 the governors introduced an intervention strategy to help raise the standards further throughout the school and are looking to find other ways to support individual children within a very limited budget. The governors have fully supported the Forest School initiative and the introduction of thinking skills into the curriculum as ways of raising standards and children's self esteem.
The Governors meet regularly. They work in two committee who each meet twice a term. These committees are "Curriculum and Standards" and "Finance and Premises". The Full Governing Body then meets after all the committes have met, again, twice a term.
But who are the governors? Meet them below.
