A message from Jim Cobbett, Headteacher

jc2 (Small)

Welcome to our school.

Great Torrington Junior School is a large junior school situated in the market town of Great Torrington in North Devon. We currently have 12 classes of children from the ages of 7 to 11. The school governors have a policy to maintain small classes wherever possible.

The school was built in the 1970’s but recently we have had major enhancements of areas of the school. Over the years the school has justifiably earned a good reputation for the progress children with special educational needs make but we are proud of the achievements of pupils of all abilities. The school is also noted for its creative curriculum and this includes Forest School, an experience that all children gain for half a day a week, every week.

The teaching staff is experienced and are supported by a talented and well trained team of teaching assistants. Due to financial constraints these teaching assistants generally support the children with statements of special educational needs.
The school firmly supports the concept of the extended school and to this end we are able to provide on the campus, with the help of the Torrington Family Project, wrap around care from 8am to 6pm, with holiday club provision. We work with a wide range of agencies that are here to support our families and local organisations and clubs that extend the opportunities for children to particpate in activites of interest. The school itself also runs a programme of after school clubs. See "Extended Schools" section of the website for more information about clubs.

  • If you are a parent thinking of sending their child to our school then we welcome your visit and an opportunity to show you around and tell you about the opportunities that exist here for your child.
  • If you are thinking of applying for a post here may I assure you that if successful you will be working with a fully supportive team who will use your talents but equally help you develop new skills to become as effective as possible.
  • If you are an educationalist interested in what we do and how we work then we will be pleased to hear from you as we are always willing to share our ideas and experiences.

As they say in Torrington, “us be plaised to see ‘ee!”
